Indian Army ISSUES Tender for Very Short Range Air Defence Systems to Enhance Tactical Shield

In a notable advancement aimed at bolstering its tactical air defense capabilities, the Indian Army has launched a new tender for the procurement of Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS). This initiative is part of the government’s broader “Make in India” program and includes plans to acquire 48 launchers, 85 missiles, and corresponding support equipment. The primary objective of this strategic procurement is to effectively neutralize low-altitude aerial threats posed by hostile aircraft, helicopters, and, increasingly, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

This move is a direct response to the shifting aerial threat landscape in the region, particularly from neighboring Pakistan. Reports indicate that Pakistan has recently enhanced its military capabilities by acquiring advanced Turkish Akinci drones, which significantly improve its long-range reconnaissance and strike potential.

While India currently employs sophisticated systems such as the indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile and the Israeli SPYDER, there is a pressing need identified by the Army for a more mobile, shoulder-fired solution that can provide immediate protection to frontline troops against low-flying targets. The VSHORADS program is intended to address this crucial need.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been instrumental in this initiative, having successfully conducted field trials of the indigenously developed VSHORADS system in October 2024 at Pokhran, Rajasthan. During these trials, the system showcased impressive hit-to-kill capabilities across various operational scenarios, marking a significant achievement in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense technology.

Through this new tender, the Indian Army aims to accelerate the deployment of VSHORADS, thereby enhancing frontline readiness and safeguarding critical assets and installations in a region that is increasingly characterized by volatility.
