In a significant counter-espionage operation, the Amritsar Rural Police have apprehended two individuals, including a serving Indian Army soldier, for allegedly transmitting sensitive military information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The arrested suspects have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, known as Gopy Foji, a jawan of the Sikh Regiment stationed in Jammu, and his civilian accomplice Sahil Masih, also referred to as Shali, both hailing from Dhariwal in Punjab’s Amritsar district.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav reported that initial investigations indicated Gurpreet Singh was in direct contact with ISI operatives and had been using pen drives to relay confidential information. The espionage connection reportedly began through a Dubai-based drug trafficker named Arjan, also from Dhariwal, who allegedly introduced Gurpreet to ISI agents roughly five months prior to the arrests.
Authorities have seized two mobile phones from the suspects, which contained virtual numbers linked to communication with their Pakistani handlers. Gurpreet is accused of collecting, storing, and transmitting classified military data, utilizing covert drop-off methods for the exchange. Financial incentives for his actions were said to be funneled through a complex network of intermediaries, which included friends, family, and overseas contacts, all intended to avoid detection.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural, Maninder Singh, disclosed that the arrests occurred during an intelligence-driven operation as the duo was in the midst of facilitating another data transfer. Gurpreet, who has been serving in the Army since 2016, is believed to have exploited his official position to systematically disclose classified military details. The payment for his actions was managed through a layered structure designed to obscure the financial transactions.
A formal case has been initiated against the suspects under sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, along with section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Lopoke police station. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full scope of the espionage network and identify any additional collaborators, both domestically and internationally.
