India’s defence preparedness has received a significant boost from innovations that stem from battlefield experience, as evidenced by the recent recognition of Lt Col Velmurugan of the Golden Arrow Division. He was honored at InnoYoddha 2025 for his groundbreaking contributions to military engineering.
Lt Col Velmurugan has developed the Man-Portable Composite Frame System, a game-changing solution that aims to enhance the performance of modular assault bridges. By notably reducing weight while simultaneously improving structural strength, this invention represents a significant advance in military logistics and operational effectiveness. The Army Design Bureau (ADB) has recognized the system’s potential, selecting it for further advanced research and development, which positions it for future integration into the Indian Army.
In a celebration of this achievement, the Vajra Corps emphasized the importance of soldier-led innovation, showcasing how practical insights from frontline operations can meet technical expertise to produce mission-ready systems. This recognition is a testament to India’s commitment to Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in defence manufacturing. It underscores the ongoing Decade of Transformation where indigenous ideas, emerging directly from soldiers on the ground, are shaping India’s defence landscape.
Such innovations not only enhance operational capabilities but also reflect a broader trend of leveraging military experiences to drive advancements in technology and engineering within the armed forces. As India continues to prioritize indigenization and innovation, the future of its defence system looks increasingly promising, characterized by solutions that are homegrown and tailored to the specific needs of its military personnel.
