India-China Tawang Clash

On December 9, 2023, soldiers from the Indian and Chinese armed forces engaged in combat along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang region of Arunachal Pradesh. The number of soldiers engaged in the confrontation and those hurt during the incident were not disclosed by the Army. However, according to many media sources, there were more than 200 Chinese soldiers present, who were armed with spiked clubs and rods, and the number of casualties sustained by the Chinese side may be greater.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in a statement to Parliament that the Indian Army valiantly prevented Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops from invading Indian territory and forced them to retreat to their stations. The fighting in Tawang was the first bloody altercation since Indian and Chinese troops engaged in a hand-to-hand battle in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh, next to the Chinese-held Tibetan plateau, in June 2020. Following the severe confrontation in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which was the most significant military conflict between the two countries in decades, relations between India and China have taken a sharp turn for the worst.
