According to the Indian Army, the four-year B tech program (3+1 model) will replace the five-year training paradigm for officers in the Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme (TES). There is currently a five-year Technical Admission Scheme (TES) model, which was launched in 1999, for the officers’ admission into the Indian Army as BTech graduates.
Earlier Model
The Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya provides one-year military training using this approach. Following that, a three-year BTech degree is awarded at the Cadet Training Wings (CTWs), followed by a year at one of the Indian Army’s three Engineering Colleges, namely the College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune, the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Mhow, and the Military College of Mechanical & Electronics Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad.
New Model
It has now been decided to implement a four-year (3+1 Model), with three years of technical training at Cadet Training Wings (CTWs) and one year of Basic Military Training at IMA, Dehradun. Cumulative credits for training at CTWs and IMA would be counted towards BTech accreditation. JNU and AICTE have given their clearance in March 2023. The four-year training model will ensure that young officers are available in Indian Army units for one more year of service to the country. Because of the common BMT at IMA in the final year, better friendships will be established between TES and IMA GCs (ex NDA/ ACC/ DE Course), and the issue of common merit will be addressed.
Disadvantages of the Previous Model
The existing five-year Training Model has been found to have several intrinsic disadvantages over the years, necessitating a revision. The five-year training model was found to be the longest training period for any BTech admission among the three services. The cadets were not granted credit for the Basic Military Training (BMT) they received at the OTA, Gaya, and the TES cadets had no interaction with the regular admission cadets at the IMA, Dehradun, which is desirable. Furthermore, because there were no common benchmarks, TES Entry Gentlemen Cadets (GCs) are assigned IC Numbers (Service Numbers) en-block junior to IMA GCs (ex NDA/ ACC/ DE Course).
