Indian BSF Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw Repatriated After 21 Days in Pakistan Custody

In a notable development, Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw of the Border Security Force (BSF) was successfully repatriated to India today at 10:30 AM IST through the Attari-Wagah border. Shaw had inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory on April 23, 2025, while on operational duty in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab. Shortly after his crossing, he was detained by Pakistan Rangers at around 11:50 AM, remaining in their custody for a total of 21 days.

An official statement from the BSF highlighted that Shaw’s return was facilitated by persistent diplomatic efforts, which included regular flag meetings and established communication channels with the Pakistan Rangers. The handover occurred at the Attari-Wagah border, a significant crossing point between India and Pakistan, serving as a rare instance of cooperation amid ongoing tensions.

The context surrounding Shaw’s crossing stems from the Ferozepur region, which has seen increased security concerns recently. Notably, just days prior to his return, on May 9, 2025, a drone strike from Pakistan in the Ferozepur area injured three civilians, prompting India to implement precautionary measures such as blackouts and enhancements to air defense systems. This drone attack was part of a broader pattern of airspace violations detected by Indian authorities, with Colonel Sofiya Qureshi confirming the deployment of 300 to 400 drones across multiple locations on May 7 and 8, aiming at Indian military infrastructure.

Shaw’s accidental entry into Pakistan was further complicated by a diplomatic freeze that followed the Pahalgam terror attack, which had led to the suspension of flag meetings between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers. Despite these challenges, the BSF’s ongoing engagement through formal channels was pivotal in ensuring Shaw’s safe return.

The India-Pakistan border, extending over 3,323 kilometers, is recognized as one of the most volatile international boundaries globally. The Ferozepur sector is particularly sensitive due to its proximity to the Radcliffe Line, which delineates the two nations. Shaw’s repatriation underscores the significance of maintaining open lines of communication even during periods of heightened tension, allowing for the swift and safe resolution of such incidents.

This operation, referred to as “Operation Sindoor” by Indian authorities, represents a small yet meaningful stride in the management of cross-border relations, especially in light of recent escalations. The BSF has reiterated its commitment to securing India’s borders while ensuring the well-being of its personnel through both diplomatic and operational measures.
