Indian Naval Air Station: INAS 312
On November 18, 1976, the Indian Navy’s first long-range maritime reconnaissance squadron, INAS 312, was commissioned with five ex-IAF (Indian Air Force) super constellation aircraft. The Super Constellation aircraft were retired in 1983, and Tupolev 142M aircraft joined the unit in 1988. Because of their incredible Maritime Reconnaissance (MR) capabilities, the Albatross has led the Navy’s MR effort ever since, and they are among the finest aircraft of their kind in the world, as well as the quickest turbo-props. The Albatross has remained the Indian Navy’s primary aircraft for long-range reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and electronic support measures or electronic warfare (ESM/EW) missions due to ongoing equipment upgrades and incorporation of new technology.
According to an Indian Navy official, India is the ‘Preferred Security Partner’ in the Indian Ocean region (IOR), reflecting our country’s ability to play an effective strategic role in the region as well as the necessity to increase its operational reach. The Indian Navy is a vital part of this commitment, and the commissioning of INAS 312 marks a watershed moment in the IOR’s maritime security and surveillance.
