The Indian Navy is likely to commission its second nuclear submarine INS Arighat on Thursday. The commissioning of the second boat is expected to be done in presence of the top defence, national security and military officials, sources said. The submarine INS Arighat is the second boat of the Arihant class indigenous nuclear submarines and will be supporting the existing INS Arihant which was inducted in 2009. The Indian nuclear-powered ballistic submarines have been named the Arihant class which is a Sanskrit word meaning the ‘Destroyer of the Enemy‘.
In the conventional arena, the Indian Navy has already got six new Kalvari class boats and will get 15 more new boats in Project 75 India, Project-76 and Project-75 AS.
INS Arighat
It can carry 12 nuclear K-15 missiles with 1500 Km range or 4 K-4 missiles with 3500-5000 Km range. 6,000 tons weight. INS Arighat, equipped with K-15 missiles, is part of a broader strategic initiative to enhance India’s naval capabilities in response to China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
The government is expected to approve the construction of two indigenous nuclear-powered submarines at a cost of Rs. 40,000 crore, with plans to build four more in the future.
