History of OneWeb Satellites

In October of last year, 36 OneWeb Gen-1 satellites were launched as part of a commercial agreement between ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and OneWeb Ltd. On March 9, OneWeb successfully deployed 40 satellites launched by SpaceX from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The recent launch was the sixth and final mission in OneWeb’s Gen 1 LEO satellite constellation. In 2023, OneWeb’s first-generation (Gen 1) LEO satellite constellation will enable global coverage. With 582 satellites now in orbit, OneWeb will complete its global footprint of the Gen 1 constellation with an ISRO/NSIL launch later this month.

NSIL signed two launch service contracts with Network Access Associated Limited (OneWeb) last year for the launch of OneWeb LEO Broadband Communication Satellites onboard LVM3. According to NSIL, this contract with OneWeb is a historic milestone for NSIL and ISRO, as LVM3 enters the global commercial launch service market.

OneWeb Partnership

After Russia denied launch services as a result of the Ukraine war and Western sanctions, OneWeb partnered with Isro and SpaceX. When the Russian space agency laid out its demands in front of the UK government in order to launch the satellite, the Soyuz rocket was rolled out on the launch at the Russia-operated Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The demands included a guarantee that OneWeb satellites would not be used for military purposes, as well as the withdrawal of the UK government as a shareholder in OneWeb.

What is a OneWeb Satellite?

OneWeb is a global communications network comprised of 648 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. OneWeb, headquartered in London, provides high-speed, low-latency connectivity to governments, businesses, and communities all over the world.
