L3Harris has unveiled a groundbreaking software solution designed to enhance the coordination and control of multiple autonomous assets. Tailored specifically for the U.S. military, the system, known as the Autonomous Multi-Domain Operations Resiliency Platform for Heterogeneous Unmanned Swarms (AMORPHOUS), operates through an integrated command-and-control interface.
This innovative platform features an open architecture, enabling it to manage a variety of uncrewed platforms, payloads, and systems. Currently, L3Harris is in the process of developing AMORPHOUS prototypes for the U.S. Army in collaboration with the Defense Innovation Unit. During government-conducted tests, AMORPHOUS demonstrated impressive flexibility and interoperability, successfully controlling various assets across different types of vehicles and operational domains.
Jon Rambeau, the Integrated Mission Systems President at L3Harris, emphasized the significance of this project, noting that it exemplifies the company’s strategic partnerships with both venture-backed firms and non-traditional companies. These collaborations aim to accelerate the maturation of emerging defense capabilities in a manner that is both faster and more cost-effective.
AMORPHOUS is equipped with advanced decentralized decision-making capabilities, allowing uncrewed assets to operate autonomously. This functionality facilitates real-time tactical decision-making within a cohesive network. The platform is versatile enough to support critical missions across multiple domains, including air, land, sea, and space.
The system is designed for a myriad of operational tasks, such as search and rescue, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and precision strikes. Additionally, AMORPHOUS provides comprehensive tools for commanding swarms, overseeing missions, and maintaining situational awareness. According to L3Harris, the platform can manage and coordinate a vast number of unmanned assets, potentially controlling hundreds or even thousands of units simultaneously. This capability positions AMORPHOUS as a transformative tool in modern military operations, enhancing effectiveness and operational capacity across diverse mission scenarios.
