The Indian Navy’s MH-60 Romeo helicopter successfully landed on the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant for the first time, marking a key milestone. The Indian Navy released a video of the successful maiden landing of the US-made MH-60R chopper, describing it as a significant boost to its anti-submarine warfare and fleet support capabilities.
MH-60 Romeo Helicopters
The MH-60 Romeo, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is regarded as one of the most modern anti-submarine helicopters in the world and will be deployed on navy vessels. In a $905 million government-to-government contract, India has ordered 24 helicopters. The Indian Navy has received two helicopters.
The all-weather helicopter is intended to perform a variety of operations and will replace the Navy’s British-made Seaking choppers, which have been in service since 1971. The MH-60R made its first landing aboard INS Kolkata, a homemade destroyer, earlier last month, boosting the Navy’s surveillance, anti-shipping, and Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities.
The Indian Navy commissioned the home-built INS Vikrant in September of last year. The 45,000-tonne ship cost about 20,000 crore to build. The successful night-landing or night trap of a supersonic fighter jet MiG-29K on the flight deck of INS Vikrant marks a key milestone in India’s defence capability.
