Latvia has taken significant steps to bolster its military capabilities by approving an order for 42 additional ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles from GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, following a prior order made in January. The total expenditure for this new acquisition amounts to 387 million euros, equivalent to approximately $446 million. This strategic move aims to expedite the development of the nation’s mechanized infantry brigade, effectively enhancing its operational capacity by equipping an additional battalion.
Latvian Minister of Defense Andris SprÅ«ds underscored the urgency of strengthening combat capabilities, especially in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe. He stated that while it is crucial to enhance air defense and long-range missile artillery, it is equally important to fortify the mechanized brigade within the National Armed Forces. This acquisition of more infantry fighting vehicles is expected to align with NATO’s strategic objectives and significantly improve Latvia’s capability to execute essential national defense tasks.
Latvia’s commitment to strengthening its defense infrastructure comes in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. To further enhance its military readiness, Latvia has also established an agreement with Sweden for the procurement of 18 Archer 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems.
In terms of logistics, the first ASCOD vehicles from the initial order are slated for delivery as early as 2026, while deliveries from the new contract are scheduled to commence in 2027. Notably, the first order will involve a significant contribution from local industry, with at least 30% of the work—ranging from component supply to platform assembly—being handled by Latvian businesses. This initiative is expected to engage a minimum of ten local companies and includes the establishment of a service center within the country.
The ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle is designed with NATO STANAG 4569 level four armor, offering robust protection against kinetic and mine blast threats. It has a crew capacity of three and can accommodate up to six soldiers along with their combat equipment. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a variety of weaponry, including an autocannon, anti-tank systems, and machine guns, paired with state-of-the-art technologies for battlefield situational awareness.
Latvia’s enhanced procurement and local industry involvement signify a strategic push toward a more capable and self-reliant defense posture amidst evolving security challenges in the region.
