Losses Are Not Important Outcomes Are: CDS Anil Chauhan

In a significant address on the evolving nature of warfare, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan emphasized that professional military forces remain resilient in the face of setbacks and losses. Speaking at a special lecture on ‘Future Wars and Warfare’ hosted by Savitribai Phule Pune University, Gen Chauhan provided deep insights into India’s military mindset and strategic operations, particularly referencing Operation Sindoor, a recent counter-terror offensive.

Resilience Over Setbacks

General Chauhan underlined that while India did face some losses—particularly in the early stages of Operation Sindoor—outcomes matter more than initial setbacks. “Professional forces are not affected by losses. In war, morale must remain high. Adaptability is key. One must learn from mistakes and push forward without fear,” he stated.

Pakistan’s Shadow of Terror and Operation Sindoor’s Purpose

Operation Sindoor was conceived with a clear objective: to end state-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan. In his speech, General Chauhan stressed that India will not allow itself to be held hostage by Pakistan’s terror tactics or nuclear blackmail. He explained that while both nations had built advanced capabilities, none had been tested in real conflict situations, creating inherent risks. However, he noted, success often requires bold decisions, and India had confidence in its advanced counter-drone systems.

The Pahalgam Tragedy: Catalyst for Action

The CDS referred to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where victims were brutally executed with headshots in front of their families. He condemned it as an inhumane and religiously motivated act that revived painful memories of the terror India has endured. “India has suffered the maximum number of terror attacks, with nearly 20,000 lives lost,” he said, adding that such atrocities cannot be accepted in any civilized society.

Pakistan’s 48-Hour Plan Crumbles in 8 Hours

One of the most revealing parts of the lecture was Gen Chauhan’s explanation of how Pakistan’s plan to cripple India in 48 hours failed dramatically. On May 10 at 1 AM, Pakistan launched multiple escalated attacks expecting to force India into submission. However, within just 8 hours, India’s swift and focused military retaliation forced Pakistan to call for a ceasefire. “They thought it would last 48 hours. It ended in 8. Then they picked up the phone,” Chauhan remarked.

Operation Sindoor: Still Active

Contrary to public belief, Operation Sindoor is not over. Gen Chauhan clarified that the ceasefire is only a temporary cessation of hostilities, and India must remain vigilant. He drew parallels with Operation Parakram, which dragged on for nine months and caused massive disruption and expenses. In contrast, Operation Sindoor was swift, decisive, and halted before a full-scale mobilization could occur—indicating India’s strategic maturity and operational precision.

General Chauhan concluded with a warning that the Pakistani military realized they were losing at a rapid pace, which likely prompted their decision to seek a ceasefire. “We must keep our guard up,” he warned, reiterating the need for constant preparedness.

Conclusion:

Operation Sindoor stands as a testament to India’s strategic restraint, military professionalism, and refusal to bow to terror or provocation. Under the leadership of CDS General Anil Chauhan, the Indian Armed Forces have showcased not only their combat capabilities but also their resolve to protect national security without slipping into prolonged conflict.
