Lt Gen Ajay Chandpuria Highlights Role of Innovation in India’s Defense Modernization at IIT Ropar

In a noteworthy address that connected India’s academic realm with its defense sector, Lt Gen Ajay Chandpuria, General Officer Commanding of the Vajra Corps, spoke at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar. His discussion centered on India’s advancements in indigenous defense technology and the crucial role innovation plays in attaining strategic autonomy under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Speaking to an audience comprising students, faculty, and defense personnel, Lt Gen Chandpuria highlighted a remarkable 30% increase in missile accuracy since 2020, referencing data from the Journal of Defense Studies. He urged the youth to be at the forefront of technological progress, advocating unity, determination, and innovation as essential elements of their endeavors.

During the interaction, discussions revolved around reinforcing India’s multi-domain military capabilities, which encompass areas such as cyber defense, space operations, and integrated command networks. The general emphasized the necessity for cooperation between the armed forces and institutions like IITs to cultivate what he termed “techno-commanders” for the future.

Post his keynote address, Lt Gen Chandpuria toured IIT Ropar’s advanced laboratories, including those focused on VLSI and 3D printing technologies. He also engaged in discussions with the institute’s director about potential long-term collaborations in fields like microelectronic circuit design and nanoelectronics. The Nanoelectronics Research Lab, equipped with sophisticated tools such as the Synopsys TCAD-Full suite, was highlighted as a center for fostering indigenous defense innovation. A 2022 report from the India Brand Equity Foundation emphasized India’s progress in this domain, noting over 53 international defense cooperation agreements.

The Vajra Corps, established in 1950 to address threats from Pakistan, derives its name from the thunderbolt weapon of Lord Indra, forged from the bones of the sage Dadhichi. This historical context was subtly woven into the event, underscoring the Corps’ essential role in national defense while adapting to contemporary challenges.

Lt Gen Chandpuria’s visit and address served as a significant step in aligning India’s academic potential with its defense modernization efforts, laying the groundwork for a new generation of innovators ready to influence the future of national security.
