The Government of India has appointed Mahesh Dixit, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the country’s leading domestic intelligence agency. This decision was confirmed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Dixit, a member of the 1993 batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, succeeds the outgoing IB chief following the completion of the latter’s tenure. With close to three decades of service, Dixit has garnered a reputation for his extensive experience in intelligence operations and internal security matters.
Throughout his career in the Intelligence Bureau, he has held several crucial roles, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, Left-Wing Extremism, and cross-border security. Notably, he served as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar, where he was instrumental in managing intelligence operations across Jammu, Kashmir, and Leh. His efforts during the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 have been acknowledged as significant in enhancing intelligence gathering and ensuring internal security in the region.
Dixit is recognized for his strong field intelligence network and his command in counter-insurgency operations. His work has been particularly focused on tackling challenges posed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, cross-border infiltration, radicalization, and narco-terrorism.
As he steps into his new role, Dixit will lead the Intelligence Bureau at a time when India faces myriad internal security challenges. These include threats from terrorism, cyber risks, organized crime, and other emerging security issues that require meticulous attention and coordination among various security and intelligence agencies.
Security experts are optimistic that Dixit’s vast operational experience and his understanding of the security dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir will be instrumental in shaping the IB’s strategies moving forward. His leadership is seen as a pivotal step in fortifying the country’s internal security framework.
The Intelligence Bureau, established under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is India’s oldest intelligence agency. It plays a crucial role in various domains including domestic intelligence gathering, counter-intelligence, and safeguarding national security. Dixit’s appointment aligns with the government’s focus on prioritizing experienced leadership to effectively tackle the evolving landscape of security challenges facing the nation.
