The Indian Navy’s MH-60R multirole helicopters landed for the first time on the home-built destroyer INS Kolkata, marking a key milestone. This accomplishment significantly improves the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capacity. According to the navy, the MH-60R helicopter is a flexible platform noted for its superb ASW, surveillance, anti-shipping, and search and rescue capabilities.
Its integration with Indian Navy vessels will boost the navy’s capabilities to fight underwater threats, monitor maritime activity, and perform surveillance operations, according to the Navy. Lockheed Martin manufactures the MH-60R. Under the context of foreign military sales, India is purchasing 24 of these helicopters from the US government. They are being outfitted with India-specific equipment and weapons. In July 2021, the Navy got the first two of the choppers from the United States.
According to Lockheed Martin’s website, their performance-based logistics programme for the US Navy’s MH-60R helicopters achieves 95% flight readiness and availability – a rate unrivalled by other maritime helicopters.
MH-60/SH-60 Romeo Helicopters
The Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk (or Sea Hawk) is a twin turboshaft engine multi-mission US Navy helicopter based on the US Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk and a part of the Sikorsky S-70 family. The folding main rotor blades and a movable tail decrease the aircraft’s footprint aboard ships the most.
These three-dimensional helicopters would help India strengthen its defences against regional adversaries. These Lockheed Martin Corporation helicopters, outfitted with hellfire missiles and night vision systems, are a force to be reckoned with. These helicopters will be crucial in monitoring the Indian Ocean, where the Chinese military is a constant danger. The combination of the Boeing P8i and the MH-60 Romeos will strengthen the Indian Navy’s submarine hunting and surveillance capabilities. The helicopters will be critical when the Indian Aircraft Carrier, INS Vikrant, sails since its three-dimensional capabilities encompassing the surface, air, and water will aid in detecting foreign enemy troops.
