Major Civil Defence Mock Drill Planned Across Four Indian States Following Terror Attack

A significant civil defence mock drill is scheduled to be conducted across four crucial Indian states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir—prompted by the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 tourists. This initiative marks the first nationwide civil drill of its kind since the 1971 Indo-Pak war, reflecting a focused effort to bolster national security and preparedness.

The Home Ministry had previously mandated mock drills in 244 districts throughout India on May 7. This date coincided with the launch of Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The primary objective of these drills is to evaluate the responsiveness and effectiveness of both civil and military structures in managing emergency situations, including air raids, terrorist assaults, and other wartime scenarios.

The upcoming drill will incorporate several key elements aimed at testing critical emergency response systems. Air raid sirens will be activated to evaluate response times and the execution of blackout procedures. In border regions, particularly areas near the Line of Control such as Uri in Kashmir, community bunkers have been established, while schoolchildren in towns like Arnia have participated in evacuation exercises to ensure readiness.

Moreover, the safety protocols will emphasize the protection of vital infrastructure, which includes military and paramilitary facilities, hospitals, and communication centers. Civil defence teams will work closely with local organizations to provide education on emergency standard operating procedures (SOPs), evacuation plans, and designated shelter locations for civilians, students, and staff.

Officials are urging residents in the participating areas to maintain composure, adhere to instructions during the siren tests, and engage with the drill seriously. This preparatory exercise is essential for reinforcing the nation’s civilian defence capabilities in light of increasing regional tensions. As the drill unfolds, it aims to ensure that all citizens can respond effectively to unforeseen emergencies, thereby enhancing overall national security.
