Maya OS: The Indian Defence Ministry has opted to replace Microsoft’s operating system (OS) in all computers that can connect to the Internet with Maya, a locally designed Ubuntu-based OS.

The new operating system is now being rolled out solely on Defence Ministry computers, not those of the three Services. While the Navy is claimed to have approved the use of Maya in its systems, the Army and Air Force are still reviewing the programme.

What Is Maya OS?

Maya OS is a new operating system created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) of the Indian government.

Maya was created in six months by Indian government agencies to combat malware attacks by hackers who are increasingly targeting key infrastructure and government entities. The new operating system will be protected by a technology known as Chakravyuh. This end-point system is also installed on machines with Maya installed.

 Maya OS

It is built on the open-source Ubuntu platform and is meant to be more safe and dependable than Windows or macOS. Maya OS has several properties that make it ideal for usage in defence applications. These characteristics are as follows:

  • Strong Security: Maya OS has been designed with security in mind, with features such as full disk encryption, intrusion detection, and sandboxing. This makes it less vulnerable to cyberattacks than other operating systems.
  • Reliability: Maya OS has been rigorously tested to ensure that it is reliable and stable. This is important for defence applications, where downtime can be costly and dangerous.

However, how effective is this new operating system, and how does it differ from Microsoft’s Windows? While both operating systems provide a framework for users to connect with computer hardware, Maya and Windows are drastically different in terms of cost and construction.

Windows Operating System

Windows is a piece of commercial software that Microsoft sells for a price. It is the most extensively used operating system, and it is simple to install and use. The Windows NT kernel is used by devices powered by Microsoft’s operating system. An operating system’s kernel is its heart. It operates in the Random Access Memory (RAM) of a computer and instructs the device on how to do specific tasks.

Maya OS: Difference in the core

This design was monolithic, which means that a single programme held all of the code required to accomplish kernel-related operations. This architecture provides the underlying hardware with extensive and powerful abstraction. However, it was also big and difficult to maintain because of the millions of lines of code.

Due to limitations in traditional architecture, a new kernel design known as the microkernel was created. This concept divided the monolithic system into numerous small servers that communicated over a smaller kernel while allowing for more user customization.

Maya OS: Conclusion

Maya OS is a locally developed operating system, which means India does not have to rely on foreign sources for its defence software. This is critical for national security and self-sufficiency. To conclude, Maya OS is a significant development in India’s efforts to improve its cybersecurity posture. It is a homegrown operating system that is designed to meet the specific needs of the Indian government.
