We’ve all heard of India’s Republic Day. But how much do we actually know about the Republic Day Parade? Most of us have seen photos and videos of bike stunts performed during the Parade. The Indian Army’s ‘Daredevils Motorcycle Display team’ conducts such exercises. Shikha Surabhi was the first woman to be selected for the daredevils squad. In 2019, Captain Shikha Surabhi joined the Daredevils Motorcycle Display Team.
About Captain Shikha Surabhi
Shikha’s childhood interest in sports paved the way for her recruitment into the Indian Army. Shikha’s mother was a physical education teacher. Shikha, who had previously participated in a variety of sports, began to enjoy the adventure more when she discovered karate and judo. Shikha’s parents were also supportive.
Shikha joined the Indian Army after finishing her engineering degree in Jaipur in 2013. When she saw male soldiers riding bikes, her interest in biking grew. Shikha claims that learning martial arts taught her to be self-sufficient. Her parents gave her the keys to a bike and told her to get trained when she was 15 years old. She wanted to ride the bullet after seeing the male officers do so. She went to Le Ladakh after learning to ride a bike. Later, when she was posted in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, she rode her bike around the neighborhood, which gave her more confidence.

Shikha expressed interest in joining the Daredevils squad after taking over as an officer in 2015. Surabhi clarified that her commanding officers were the ones who believed in her and gave her confidence. Shikha is an inspiration to many Army girls and female officers. “Serve the country. Die for the sake of the country. And I can say that if someone asks me to do something for the country, I will be the first person to die for it,” Shikha says.
