Meet Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar: She Will Assist in Unfurling National Flag with President on Republic Day

Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar represents a new generation of women officers in the Indian Air Force—defined by professionalism, quiet determination, and a deep-rooted sense of national service. On January 26, 2026, she will step into the national spotlight as she assists the President of India in unfurling the Tricolour at Kartavya Path during the 77th Republic Day celebrations.

This prestigious honour places her at the heart of one of India’s most solemn national ceremonies, symbolising unity, sovereignty, and the disciplined service of the armed forces.

Roots in Service and Early Inspiration

Hailing from Kasni village in Haryana—a region known for its deep association with the armed forces—Flight Lieutenant Dhankar grew up surrounded by values of discipline, responsibility, and respect for the uniform. Raised in the Jat heartland, her upbringing instilled a sense of pride in serving the nation.

A defining influence in her early life was her father, who had earlier participated in a Republic Day Parade. Witnessing his experience left a lasting impression and sparked a childhood dream of one day standing on Kartavya Path herself. What began as admiration gradually transformed into a firm ambition to join the armed forces.

The NCC Foundation

Dhankar’s journey toward the Indian Air Force took a concrete shape during her college years at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, University of Delhi, where she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The organisation, known for shaping future military leaders, played a pivotal role in her development.

Rising to the rank of Cadet Sergeant Major (CSM), she displayed leadership under pressure, organisational ability, and strong personal discipline. Her performance earned recognition within her NCC unit, inspiring fellow cadets and preparing her mentally and physically for military life.

Entry into the Indian Air Force

With a clear sense of purpose, Akshita Dhankar appeared for the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), one of the most competitive entry routes into the Indian Air Force. She was subsequently recommended by the 2 Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), Mysore, under the M AFCAT (W) 551 entry for the Administration branch.

She was commissioned as a Flying Officer on June 17, 2023, as part of the 211 Short Service Commission (Women) Ground Duty Course. Her steady professional growth soon saw her promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant, reflecting both her competence and the Air Force’s merit-based progression system.

Role as an Administration Officer

As an officer from the Administration branch, Flight Lieutenant Dhankar is entrusted with key responsibilities that ensure the smooth functioning of the Air Force. These include personnel management, logistics coordination, and organisational planning—roles that directly support operational readiness across units.

Despite the significance of her responsibilities, she largely remained away from the public eye until her selection for the Republic Day Parade 2026.

Honour at Kartavya Path

On January 26, 2026, Flight Lieutenant Dhankar will assist the President of India in unfurling the National Flag at Kartavya Path—an honour reserved for officers who exemplify professionalism, discipline, and commitment to service.

Speaking about the preparations, she described the training phase as demanding, involving early mornings and long hours. However, she emphasised that representing the Indian Air Force on such a historic national platform made every effort worthwhile.

The 77th Republic Day Parade will also highlight the Indian Air Force’s evolving identity, including the participation of women Agniveers in the Air Force band contingent and the ‘Sindoor’ fighter formation commemorating Operation Sindoor.

Inspiration for the Next Generation

Back in her hometown of Kasni, Dhankar’s achievement has been a source of quiet pride. A local gathering where young girls sang in her honour captured the emotional impact of her journey—one that began in rural India and reached the nation’s most symbolic stage.

For Flight Lieutenant Dhankar, the moment extends beyond personal achievement. She hopes her story encourages young Indians, especially women, to view the armed forces as an attainable and honourable career path.

By 2026, women constitute approximately 13 percent of the Indian Air Force’s personnel. While challenges remain, their increasing presence in national ceremonies reflects steady progress toward inclusivity and equality.

A Symbol of a Changing Force

From her NCC days to selection boards and ultimately to Kartavya Path, Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar’s journey is defined by perseverance, discipline, and unwavering commitment. Her role in the Republic Day Parade stands as a quiet yet powerful reminder that India’s armed forces continue to evolve—modern, inclusive, and firmly rooted in service to the nation.
