- Biofuels include ethanol, biodiesel, and sustainable aviation fuels. They are cleaner fuels made from natural materials like crops and are seen as a key solution to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. Even though India uses more biofuel than China, it still produces less.
- In 2024, India made 70 kbbloe/d of biofuel, while China made 106 kbbloe/d. India’s production grew 27% in 2024 and has grown 30.4% every year over the last 10 years. Meanwhile, China’s production has increased more slowly overall but saw a 31% rise in 2024 alone.
- Globally, biofuel demand hit a new high of 2.2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2024. The Asia Pacific region led growth with a 47 kbbloe/d rise, followed by North America at 42 kbbloe/d.
- The United States remains the biggest biofuel user at 856 kbbloe/d, followed by Brazil, Indonesia, India, and China. Despite more use of clean fuels, global CO₂ emissions from energy still rose by 1% in 2024—setting a new record for the fourth straight year. Experts warned that while clean energy is growing fast, fossil fuel use is also at record highs, especially in China, which still uses more coal than the rest of the world combined.

Govt Launches First- Ever Incentive Scheme
- Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy launched a scheme to incentivise electric trucks (e-trucks) under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. This is the first time that the government has launched support for electric trucks to help the country’s transition to clean and sustainable freight mobility.
- The scheme aims to support the deployment of around 5 thousand 6 hundred e-trucks, promoting indigenous manufacturing and reducing logistics costs and carbon footprint.
- To ensure the reliability of electric trucks, the manufacturers will provide a comprehensive manufacturer-backed warranty. This will include a five-year or five-hundred-thousand-kilometre warranty for the battery. Speaking on the occasion, H.D. Kumaraswamy said a dedicated provision has been made to reserve incentives for approximately one thousand one hundred e-trucks registered in Delhi, with an outlay of one hundred crore rupees. He said the scheme provides financial incentives for N2 and N3 category e-trucks, with demand incentives ranging up to 9.6 lakh rupees, depending on the gross vehicle weight.
- The N2 category includes trucks with a gross vehicle weight of above 3.5 tonnes and up to 12 tonnes, while the N3 category covers those exceeding 12 tonnes up to 55 tonnes.
- The Minister said that the potential beneficiaries of the scheme include e-truck users in the cement, ports, steel, and logistics sectors. The scheme is a strategic move to support India’s commitment to reducing vehicular emissions and achieving its net-zero 2070 goals.
- To ensure the reliability of electric trucks, manufacturers will provide a comprehensive warranty, and scrapping old polluting trucks is mandatory to avail of incentives.
New Caledonia To Become New State In French Republic
- France has announced a historic deal with New Caledonia in which the South Pacific overseas territory will be declared a new state. The 13-page accord, reached after negotiations in Paris, proposes the creation of a State of New Caledonia, within the French Republic, inscribed in the French constitution, and the creation of a Caledonian nationality alongside French nationality.
- The deal also calls for an economic and financial recovery pact that would include a renewal of the territory’s nickel processing capabilities. The agreement hailed by French President Emmanuel Macron as historic still needs final approval in New Caledonia.
- The accord may face a vote by New Caledonians in February. France colonised the Pacific archipelago in the 1850s, and it became an overseas territory after World War II, with French citizenship granted to all Kanaks in 1957. The last independence referendum in New Caledonia was held in 2021.
India – Saudi Arabia
- Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers JP Nadda concluded his three-day visit to Saudi Arabia, securing crucial agreements that will significantly enhance India’s fertilizer supply chain and strengthen bilateral cooperation in health and pharmaceutical sectors.
- The visit, which took place from July 11-13 in Dammam and Riyadh, focused primarily on enhancing bilateral cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia in chemicals and fertilizers. Nadda led a high-level delegation that included the Secretary and other senior officials from the Department of Fertilizers and Ministry of External Affairs.
- During discussions with Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar bin Ibrahim Al Khorayef in Riyadh, both ministers witnessed the signing of long-term agreements between Maaden and Indian companies including IPL, KRIBHCO, and CIL.
- These agreements will supply an enhanced 3.1 million metric tons of Diammonium Phosphate fertilizer per annum for five years from 2025-26 onwards, with provision for further extension of five years with mutual consent. The agreements represent a substantial increase from current supply levels. India’s imports of DAP fertilizer from Saudi Arabia totaled 1.9 million metric tons in 2024-25, reflecting a 17 percent increase over the 1.6 million metric tons imported during FY 2023-24.
- The new agreements will boost this supply to 3.1 million metric tons from the upcoming fiscal year. Both sides emphasized their commitment to broadening bilateral relations to include other key fertilizers such as Urea along with DAP, aiming to further ensure India’s fertilizer security. Discussions also covered facilitating mutual investments, with focus on exploring opportunities for Indian Public Sector Undertakings to invest in the Saudi fertilizer sector and reciprocal Saudi investments in India.
- The ministers deliberated on avenues for collaborative research, particularly in developing India-specific customized and alternative fertilizers to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. A joint team has been established led by Secretary Fertilizer on the Indian side and the Vice Minister for Mining Affairs in the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources on the Saudi side to explore long-term collaboration in this sector.
- Nadda also held a bilateral meeting with Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Minister of Energy and co-chair of the Economy and Investment Committee of the Strategic Partnership Council between India and Saudi Arabia, to discuss ways to enhance economic partnership between the two countries. The Prince hosted a lunch in honor of the Union Minister.
- In the health sector, Nadda met with Abdulaziz Al-Rumaih, Saudi Vice Minister of Health, in Riyadh to discuss enhancing cooperation in medical services, health care, pharmaceuticals, digital health solutions, and knowledge exchange.
- They noted the significance of the bilateral MoU on Health signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to Saudi Arabia. The delegation visited Maaden facilities at Ras Al Khair and toured the Phosphate production plant.
First Global Conference On Manuscript Heritage
- India will host its first-ever global conference on manuscript heritage from September 11 to 13, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Announced by the Ministry of Culture, this major event aims to protect, promote, and share India’s ancient manuscript knowledge with the world. The announcement was made on Guru Purnima, highlighting the country’s respect for its rich guru–śiṣya tradition and knowledge legacy.
- Titled “Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy Through Manuscript Heritage”, the three-day international event will gather over 500 delegates, including 75 well-known scholars and cultural experts from India and abroad. The event will be conducted in a hybrid format—allowing both in-person and online participation—to ensure wide global reach.
- India has more than 10 million manuscripts in various scripts and languages, covering areas like philosophy, science, medicine, literature, rituals, and arts. This conference is a step toward protecting this rare knowledge and making it more accessible to younger generations and global researchers.
- The event is also a tribute to Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions on September 11, 1893. That date was chosen for the conference as a reminder of India’s deep-rooted commitment to global peace and knowledge sharing. The event will feature rare manuscript exhibitions, including works listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, along with live conservation demos, cultural programs, workshops, and displays by startups focused on manuscript innovation.
- The conference will launch a special plan called the Manuscript Research Partner (MRP) programme, offering training, script labs, and hands-on workshops for young scholars. Another major outcome will be the New Delhi Declaration on Manuscript Heritage, which will guide future actions on preservation, translation, and digitisation.
Cruise Bharat Mission
- Gujarat has become the first state in India to join the Cruise Bharat Mission, a national initiative to boost cruise tourism. This move, announced in Ahmedabad, is expected to help Gujarat tap into its long coastline and develop new cruise circuits. It is a key step toward making India a top global cruise destination by 2029.
- Gujarat has officially partnered with the Cruise Bharat Mission, launched by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on September 30, 2024. The mission aims to increase India’s sea cruise traffic tenfold by 2029. Gujarat’s decision puts the state at the forefront of India’s push to promote maritime tourism.
- The state has the longest coastline in India, stretching 2,340 km, but lacked dedicated cruise terminals until now. With this alignment, Gujarat will now work to build cruise infrastructure like other ports in Mumbai, Cochin, Chennai, and Mormugao. Gujarat plans to create several cruise circuits along its western coastline.
- These will connect popular tourist spots such as Diu, Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Okha, and the scenic Padala Island. The circuits will also support the existing Ghogha–Hazira Ro-Pax route. To organize the tourism experience better, the coastal routes are divided into three clusters, Padala Island – Rann of Kutch, Porbandar – Veraval – Diu, Dwarka – Okha – Jamnagar.
- Each cluster links destinations within a 100-km radius, making it easy and enjoyable for tourists to visit religious, cultural, and natural sites. By joining this national project, Gujarat is setting an example for other coastal states in India. It is not just building better tourism infrastructure but also aiming to attract investment, boost local employment, and promote cultural tourism.
- The Cruise Bharat Mission is expected to bring major economic benefits by opening India’s vast coastline to international and domestic cruise travel.
India’s First Digital Nomad Village
- The village of Yakten in Sikkim’s Pakyong district was declared India’s first digital nomad village. This initiative was launched to create a sustainable remote work hub in the Himalayas. It aims to support local homestay owners with steady income and attract digital professionals from across India and abroad. Yakten’s transformation is part of the ‘Nomad Sikkim’ project, a collaboration between the Pakyong district administration and NGO Sarvahitey.
- The project addresses the seasonal income gap for homestay operators, especially during the six-month off-season from April to October. Infrastructure upgrades include dual internet lines, village-wide Wi-Fi, and power backups to ensure uninterrupted connectivity. Plans are underway to resolve water scarcity under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
- Yakten offers a unique blend of rural life and modern work needs. Unlike urban coworking spaces, it provides broadband-ready homestays run by local families, encouraging a warm and authentic experience. The village setting includes orchards, mountain trails, and traditional meals, creating a balanced environment for work and well-being.
- This model promotes sustainable tourism and rural development. Internet connectivity is a priority, with two internet lines and comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage installed. Electricity supply is supported by inverters to prevent outages. Water management solutions are planned to address scarcity. The village is accessible via Pakyong Airport, with well-maintained roads ensuring year-round connectivity.
- Yakten’s initiative provides a new income source for locals, reducing dependence on seasonal tourism. It exemplifies how rural areas can adapt to the digital economy without losing cultural identity. This model may inspire similar projects across India, supporting decentralisation of work and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
- Visitors can explore scenic trails such as the 7-km trek to Jhandi Dara View Point with views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The village offers peaceful walks through terraced fields and community gardens. Nearby historical ruins and monasteries add cultural depth to the visitor experience. Yakten’s success lies in its small scale and quality-focused approach. It is a pilot for integrating remote work with rural life and sustainable tourism. The village’s example encourages rethinking workspaces beyond cities and marks the potential of India’s countryside in the digital age.
