Navantia Begins Construction of UK Fleet Solid Support Ships in Spain

Navantia’s shipyard in Puerto Real, Cádiz, has commenced the production of modules for the UK’s Fleet Solid Support program, marking a significant advancement in naval collaboration between the UK and Spain. This program is a joint effort involving Navantia UK based in Appledore, Harland and Wolff in Belfast, and Navantia’s facilities in Spain, aimed at constructing three logistics ships for the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Last month, the steel cutting phase took place at Navantia UK’s shipyard, signifying the commencement of physical production three years after the contract, valued at £1.6 billion (approximately $2.1 billion), was signed. The modules fabricated in Puerto Real will subsequently be transported to Belfast, where they will undergo final assembly, thorough testing, and preparation for delivery.

The projected timeline indicates that the three vessels are expected to be operational by 2032. Gonzalo Mateo Guerrero, Navantia’s Director of Operations and Business Development, emphasized the company’s dedication to this project, stating that the commencement of work at their shipyard illustrates Navantia’s commitment to a crucial customer. He noted, “We are placing our very best capabilities at the service of this program and its delivery, meeting the highest standards of quality and rigor.”

The support ships will be the second-largest vessels in service with the UK, surpassed only by aircraft carriers. They are specifically designed to extend the Royal Navy’s operational reach by allowing the fleet to remain at sea for longer durations without needing to return to port. Crewed by Royal Fleet Auxiliary personnel, these vessels will play a pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy Carrier Strike Group, providing essential supplies such as ammunition, spare parts, and food.

Each ship will tower at 216 meters (708 feet) in length, approximately the length of two Premier League football fields, with a significant displacement of 39,000 tons. This ambitious project underscores the growing partnership between the UK and Spanish naval industries, aiming to bolster the capabilities of the Royal Navy in the years to come.
