The National Commission for Women (NCW) has issued a strong condemnation of the online harassment directed at Himanshi Narwal, the widow of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who tragically lost his life in a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The Commission criticized the targeting of a woman for voicing her opinions as wholly unacceptable, urging the public to show respect while expressing their views.
In the wake of the April 22 attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals and occurred while Himanshi and her husband were on their honeymoon in Baisaran, she made a heartfelt appeal for unity. She urged people to refrain from spreading hate toward Muslims or Kashmiris, emphasizing the need for peace. “I just want the nation to pray for him, that he may be at peace. That’s all I ask. And one more thing — please don’t spread hate. I’m seeing a lot of anger toward Muslims and Kashmiris, and we don’t want that. We want peace — only peace,” she expressed.
Despite her poignant appeal, Himanshi endured a barrage of abusive comments and backlash on social media, which prompted the NCW to release a firm statement condemning the trolling as “deeply disappointing and shameful.” The Commission reiterated, “Trolling someone, especially a grieving woman, for expressing her beliefs is wrong. Everyone has the right to speak their mind, but it should be done respectfully and within the limits of our Constitution.”
The NCW also expressed condolences over the tragic loss of Lt. Narwal, highlighting the collective mourning of the nation. They noted the disturbing detail that he was reportedly questioned about his religion before being shot, further underscoring the gravity of the situation.
“The country is outraged by this tragic act of terrorism,” the NCW stated, reaffirming its commitment to support women and to defend their right to dignity and respect. The Commission’s response illustrates a broader societal call for empathy in the face of grief and intolerance.
