The Netherlands has announced a substantial military aid package valued at 400 million euros (approximately $457 million) aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s maritime defense capabilities against ongoing threats from Russia. This comprehensive initiative encompasses the provision of over 100 fast patrol craft, transport boats, and special operations vessels, in addition to more than 50 maritime drones, though the specific types of drones have not been disclosed.
Included in this military assistance are also various weapon systems, sensors, and spare parts, which are critical for the operational readiness of the Ukrainian Navy. In conjunction with these assets, an additional investment of 20 million euros (about $22.8 million) has been earmarked for the training of Ukrainian marines, acquisition of munitions, tactical gear, and supporting equipment.
This announcement was made by Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans during a meeting of a multinational security cooperation group focused on Ukraine held in Brussels, Belgium. Brekelmans emphasized the significance of the aid package, stating, “It is an important package to strengthen the maritime security of Ukraine. We see that the Russian threat on the Black Sea and the Dnieper River, among other places, is only increasing.” He further highlighted that the port of Odessa and the maritime trade routes that traverse the Black Sea are vital to the Ukrainian economy, noting that “without the right protection, it can collapse. We simply cannot let that happen.”
The timing of this aid package follows the recent delivery of the last batch of F-16 fighter jets that the Netherlands had promised to Ukraine, as part of a collaborative effort with the United States and Denmark. These fighter jets were dispatched from Volkel Air Base and had undergone preparations in Belgium before being commissioned into the Ukrainian armed forces.
During the same event in Brussels, Brekelmans indicated that this milestone regarding the F-16s does not signify the end of support efforts. “That’s not the end of the job,” he said, adding that “Our work continues with the training of pilots, maintenance personnel, and other ground personnel. We also continue to support the Ukrainian Air Force in terms of parts, infrastructure, and ammunition.”
This comprehensive aid package underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities amidst escalating military pressures in the region, further solidifying partnerships in international security efforts.
