The Dutch Ministry of Defence has announced the deployment of 25 YPR armored infantry vehicles to Ukraine, in a significant step to bolster the country’s ground military capabilities in light of ongoing Russian hostilities. The vehicles, specially configured for medical transport, will enhance the logistics of moving injured troops from the frontlines, addressing a critical need as the conflict enters its third year.
This commitment was unveiled in Brussels by Netherlands Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans, during the latest Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting. This coalition of allied nations focuses on providing military and humanitarian support to Ukraine, which has been fighting against Russian aggression since the start of the conflict.
Brekelmans highlighted the urgency of support for Ukraine, stating, “We are approaching the sad milestone of 3 years of large-scale Russian aggression in Ukraine. For 3 years, Ukrainians have been fighting tirelessly for their future. And with it, our freedom and security.” He further emphasized the Netherlands’ dedication to the Ukrainian cause, revealing that the country has committed more than €10 billion (approximately $10.4 billion) in military aid, with approximately €6 billion (about $6.2 billion) already dispensed.
The Defence Minister stressed the necessity of continued support, especially as Ukrainian forces face increasing challenges on the battlefield, asserting, “Peace with Russia is only possible through military force.”
The YPR vehicles, which will be sent to Ukraine, have a robust construction featuring a chassis made from combined aluminum and laminated steel, providing a critical level of protection. Each vehicle, weighing in at 13.7 tonnes (30,203 kilograms) and measuring 5 meters (16 feet) in length, is operated by a three-person crew and has the capacity to carry up to seven soldiers. It boasts impressive logistical specifications with a fuel capacity exceeding 400 liters, powered by a Detroit six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine delivering 264 horsepower. This configuration allows the YPR to achieve an operational range of 490 kilometers (304 miles) and a maximum speed of 61 kilometers (38 miles) per hour. For combat roles, the vehicle can be outfitted with armaments such as a 20-millimeter autocannon and a 7.62-millimeter machine gun.
In addition to the shipment of YPR vehicles, Minister Brekelmans confirmed that the final batch of T-72 main battle tanks promised to Ukraine in 2022 has been delivered. He also announced that Ukraine has received a new group of F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets, fulfilling commitments made by the Dutch government earlier this year, further enhancing the operational capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This multi-faceted military support underscores the Netherlands’ active role in aiding Ukraine as it contends with the sustained military threat from Russia.
