Nigeria is on the verge of finalizing a significant acquisition of military aircraft and helicopters from Italian defense contractor Leonardo. Reports indicate that the deal, valued at approximately 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion), encompasses 24 M-346FA combat jets and 10 AW-109 attack helicopters. This procurement also includes vital support elements such as training, spare parts, and maintenance services to ensure the operational readiness of the new fleet.
Production updates reveal that six of the M-346FAs are already in advanced stages, with three currently undergoing flight tests. Additionally, three of the AW-109 helicopters are prepared for shipment, as reported by Business Insider Africa. The entire delivery process is scheduled to extend through 2026.
Once completed, this acquisition will represent the largest military procurement by a West African nation, marking a historic investment in regional defense capabilities. Nigeria’s decision to incorporate Italian military systems as part of a broader strategy for tactical airborne modernization has been in the works since 2021. However, the specific terms and timelines for the deal have only recently taken shape in 2023 and 2024.
The Nigerian cabinet committee has approved a loan strategy approximating $618 million to support this acquisition along with necessary munitions. In October 2024, representatives from Nigeria traveled to Italy to inspect the first batch of aircraft, affirming the manufacturing status, delivery timelines, and plans for establishing a maintenance center in Nigeria to support the fleet’s operational life.
Once operational, the M-346FA jets are expected to enhance the capabilities of the Nigerian Armed Forces across the country, particularly in their ongoing efforts against jihadist groups. The AW-109 helicopters will complement these efforts by bolstering logistics, emergency support, and intelligence operations, thereby expanding the military’s operational scope and effectiveness.
