North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans for the significant expansion and modernization of the nation’s missile production capabilities, emphasizing the need for new factories to fulfill increasing demand from the armed forces. The directive was publicized through state media on Friday, following a visit Kim made to munitions factories alongside high-ranking officials.
According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim stressed the importance of enhancing production capacities to meet the operational requirements of North Korea’s missile and artillery forces. He indicated that the expansion of the missile and shell production sector is crucial for strengthening the nation’s war deterrent.
In recent years, North Korea has ramped up its missile testing activities, focusing on refining its precision strike capabilities. Analysts suggest that this shift is designed not only to challenge the military readiness of the United States and South Korea but also to test weaponry that could potentially be exported to allies like Russia.
Kim’s remarks came shortly after state media reported on his visit to a factory dedicated to nuclear submarines, where he expressed a commitment to counter the perceived threat from South Korea’s plans to develop its own such vessels. During this visit, he also engaged with researchers working on “new underwater secret weapons,” as reported by KCNA.
Furthermore, Kim has been directly involved in overseeing missile tests, including a recent launch of new high-altitude long-range anti-air missiles over the Sea of Japan, showcasing North Korea’s continuing development of advanced military technology.
As the country prepares for a major congress of the ruling Korean Workers Party set to take place in early 2026, there is a strong emphasis on refining both economic and military development strategies for the forthcoming five-year period.
