In a remarkable demonstration of precision and skill, the National Security Guard (NSG), also known as the “Black Cats,” clinched the top spot in the sniper category at the 15th All India Police Commando Competition (AIPCC), held from February 10 to 22, 2025. The prestigious event was organized by the All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) at the CRPF Group Centre, reflecting the elite capabilities of India’s counter-terrorism forces.
The NSG sniper team showcased exceptional performance, outperforming their competitors, including those utilizing the high-powered American Barrett 50 Cal rifle. Their success can be attributed to their effective use of the indigenously developed .338 Saber sniper rifle, produced by SSS Defence, which has gained recognition for its world-class capabilities.
This victory represents a significant achievement for India’s defense sector, underscoring the effectiveness of the .338 Saber and its growing reputation on the international stage. Earlier this year, the rifle secured an export order to a foreign country, indicating India’s progress in the field of indigenous weaponry.
The AIPCC is known for challenging police and paramilitary forces across India with demanding tests of marksmanship, tactical expertise, and operational preparedness. The NSG’s success is a testament to their rigorous training programs, which have been in place since the force’s establishment in 1984. These programs focus on various specialties including counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, close-quarter battles, and advanced sniper tactics.
In a statement regarding this significant achievement, the NSG Director General commended the dedication of the team members and emphasized the importance of indigenous technology in bolstering national security capabilities. He remarked, “This achievement reflects the NSG’s commitment to excellence.”
The .338 Saber, distinguished for its accuracy and operational range exceeding 1 kilometer, is currently being considered for procurement by the Indian Army. This follows the issuance of a Request for Information (RFI) in June 2022 for 4,800 units of the rifle under the “Buy Indian” initiative. The move aligns with the Indian Army’s strategic shift towards modernizing its sniper systems, as older platforms like the Soviet-era Dragunov are gradually phased out.

The NSG’s victory not only reinforces its status as a top-tier counter-terrorism unit but also positions India as an emerging force in the global defense manufacturing arena, showcasing a blend of cutting-edge technology and the unparalleled skill of its security personnel.
