Recently, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the medium-range ballistic missile Agni Prime (Agni-P), a newly built indigenous missile, from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
A nuclear-capable next-generation enhanced model of the Agni class of missiles is known as the Agni Prime or Agni-P. The DRDO created this medium-range missile to take the place of the Agni-I and Agni-II missiles. The maximum range of this two-stage, 10-meter-long canisterized missile is 2,000 kilometers. It is less than half as heavy as Agni 3 missiles. It has brand-new propulsion and guiding systems. The missile has a high percentage of survival and can be launched from portable launchers.
About Agni Prime
- It is a canisterized missile with two stages.
- The sixth and most recent Agni series missile type (under IGMDP – Integrated Guided Missile Development Program).
- The missile has numerous independently targetable re-entry vehicles and may launch several warheads at various sites over a range of 1,000–2,000 kilometers.

- The 10.5-meter-tall missile, which has a 1.2-meter diameter, can transport warheads weighing up to 1.5 tonnes.
- It is capable of high-altitude maneuvers while focusing on a target.
- After a few launches with user assistance, these missiles will be incorporated into the armed forces.
- Its navigation and the guiding system are dual redundant.
- The Agni-P missile will improve India’s capacity for effective deterrence.

The Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP)
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam came up with the idea to help India become self-sufficient in missile technology. It received government approval in 1983 and was finished in March 2012. The following 5 missiles were created as part of this program:
- Prithvi – Surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a short range.
- Agni – Ballistic missiles having various ranges, such as Agni (1,2,3,4,5)
- Trishul -A low-level, short-range surface-to-air missile.
- Nag – Three-generation anti-tank missile.
- Akash – Surface-to-air missile with a medium range.
