Pakistan and Bangladesh are currently in discussions regarding a potential defense pact that may result in Dhaka acquiring JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. This development follows a recent meeting between the air force chiefs of both nations in Pakistan’s capital, where they deliberated on this significant deal. The discussions also encompassed the accelerated delivery of the Super Mushshak trainer aircraft, alongside comprehensive training and support packages.
These negotiations come at a pivotal moment for Bangladesh, which has experienced political shifts following widespread unrest in August 2024. This unrest ultimately led to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India, prompting a reevaluation of the country’s defense alliances. As a result, Bangladesh has been exploring defense cooperation opportunities beyond its traditional partners, indicating a strategic pivot that could alter the regional dynamics in South Asia.
The JF-17 program, co-developed by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) in collaboration with China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, stands out as a focal point of Pakistan’s defense exports. The JF-17 is a single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft measuring approximately 46 feet (14 meters) in length, capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 1.6. With a maximum operational range of 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) and a service ceiling of 16,930 meters (55,544 feet), the aircraft is designed for versatility in combat scenarios. The latest configuration, known as Block 3, incorporates advanced features such as an active electronically scanned array radar and improved avionics, including a helmet-mounted display.
The JF-17 has already been instrumental to Pakistan’s military endeavors, notably playing a role during the armed conflict with India in May 2025, where it was successfully deployed alongside the Chinese-made J-10C fighters to engage Indian aircraft, including Rafale jets. This operational success has contributed to a growing international interest in the JF-17, with countries like Azerbaijan and Libya securing significant orders for the aircraft as part of broader defense agreements.
Additionally, there are reports of ongoing negotiations between Saudi Arabian officials and their Pakistani counterparts regarding the procurement of JF-17s. This follows the establishment of a mutual defense pact between the two countries in September 2025, highlighting the aircraft’s rising profile in the global defense market and underscoring the potential for expanded military cooperation among South Asian nations.
