Gentleman Cadets are assigned a regiment during their last year of training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) or Officers Training Academy (OTA). This allocation method is fair, and cadets are given paperwork on which to express their preferences. This blog will go over how a cadet can be assigned to their father’s regiment via a process known as Parental Claim.
What is Parental Claim?
Every battalion/ regiment does not receive an officer from every IMA or OTA passing out. It is based on the battalion’s officer shortage as well as providing a balanced mix of permanent and short-term commissioned officers. In the event of parental claims, this condition is ignored, and the officer is assigned to the battalion and later adjusted to maintain the specified strength.
Many candidates question if they can be assigned to their father’s unit; the answer is yes. Gentleman Cadets may claim their father’s regiment through Parental Claim under the following conditions:
- PC1: If the candidate’s father had led a battalion or served as a Subedar Major in a battalion, the Gentleman Cadet can select their father’s regiment via PC1.
- PC2: If the candidate’s father has received any heroism decorations, they may choose their father’s regiment via PC2.
- PC3: If the candidate’s father is or was a Lieutenant Colonel or equivalent in the battalion, they can choose their father’s regiment via PC3.
If the father had led the unit or served as Subedar Major, the parental claim is guaranteed. If the father has served in any other position, his paternal claim will be examined but will not be assured.
Parental claims are honoured in order to instil a sense of pride and belonging in the young men who have practically grown up in the battalions.
