Portugal Receives First Batch of A-29N Super Tucano Aircraft from Embraer

Portugal has welcomed the arrival of its first three A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s military aviation capabilities. The aircraft landed at the Alverca do Ribatejo facilities near Lisbon, where they are set to be outfitted to meet the operational standards required by both NATO and the Portuguese Air Force.

The acquisition, which was approved by Portugal in late 2024, comprises a total of 12 aircraft under a comprehensive contract valued at 200 million euros (approximately $210 million). This agreement not only includes the aircraft but also encompasses a flight simulator along with ongoing support and logistics services, crucial for maintaining operational readiness.

Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, noting that it plays a key role in modernizing the Portuguese air fleet while reinforcing collaboration with the local industry. The A-29 Super Tucano is recognized for its versatility, featuring advanced mission systems and precision targeting capabilities, which enhance its operational effectiveness in various scenarios.

The aircraft boasts impressive specifications with a maximum operating speed of 320 knots (592 kilometers or 367 miles per hour) and a cruise speed of 280 knots (519 kilometers or 322 miles per hour). It has a stalling speed of 80 knots (148 kilometers or 92 miles per hour) and can remain airborne for over three hours using only internal fuel. When equipped with two external fuel tanks, the endurance increases to more than five hours, allowing for extended missions.

The arrival of the A-29N Super Tucano is part of a broader initiative by Embraer to expand its defense operations in Portugal. In December 2024, the company established Embraer Defense Europe, a subsidiary based in Lisbon aimed at overseeing defense activities across Europe. This new entity will support European armed forces and NATO allies by managing programs, engineering tasks, and providing essential support services.

Earlier in the same year, the Portuguese Air Force further advanced its capabilities with the delivery of its second KC-390 multi-mission aircraft, part of a five-unit contract signed in 2019 to enhance transport and cargo capacity.

The introduction of the A-29N Super Tucano into Portugal’s military fleet signals a strategic move towards modernizing airpower and enhancing defense capabilities in collaboration with established industry partners.
