In Thiruvananthapuram, President Droupadi Murmu presided over the Navy Day 2025 celebrations, marking a significant occasion that highlighted the operational prowess of the Indian Navy. Attendees included naval personnel, dignitaries, and local citizens, all of whom witnessed a breathtaking demonstration showcasing the Navy’s advanced capabilities and maritime strength.

During her address, President Murmu underscored the importance of Navy Day, which serves to honor the selfless contributions, professionalism, and sacrifices made by Navy personnel. She expressed the nation’s deep appreciation for their unwavering dedication, referring to them as the “sentinels of India’s seas.”

Addressing the strategic significance of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), she described it as one of the most vital maritime zones worldwide, integral for global trade and energy transportation. Emphasizing India’s unique position at the heart of this region, she articulated the country’s “special responsibility” concerning maritime security.

Reaffirming India’s maritime doctrine, President Murmu stated, “We are committed to the idea of the oceans remaining open, stable, and rules-based.” This commitment is guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, reflecting a collaborative rather than competitive approach to international relations. She stressed the importance of shared maritime awareness, capacity-building, and the peaceful, lawful use of the seas.

Highlighting the Navy’s evolving role, the President noted its responsibilities in deterrence, securing the Exclusive Economic Zone, ensuring freedom of navigation, combating piracy, and functioning as a first responder during humanitarian crises across the IOR. She paid tribute to the Navy for its rapid response capabilities, particularly in evacuation missions and disaster relief efforts, and emphasized that future initiatives under India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision would enhance maritime security and regional cooperation.

Moreover, President Murmu focused on the emerging national emphasis on the Blue Economy as a fundamental pillar for sustainable development. She acknowledged the Navy’s crucial role in safeguarding sea routes, protecting marine resources, combating illegal activities, and promoting maritime scientific research. “The Navy strengthens our vision of safe, prosperous, and sustainable oceans,” she stated.

The President expressed her appreciation for the Navy’s strides in indigenous shipbuilding, technology, and innovation, noting how it has taken the lead in designing and constructing complex naval platforms within India. She conveyed her confidence that the Indian Navy would continue to spearhead technological self-reliance and significantly contribute to the nation’s advancement towards a developed India, or Viksit Bharat.

The Navy Day celebrations culminated in a dramatic showcase of naval operations, serving as a powerful reaffirmation of India’s maritime strength and the Navy’s readiness to safeguard national interests across the seas.
