Raytheon Secures $536 Million Contract from US Navy for SPY-6 Radars

Raytheon has announced a significant contract valued at $646 million to produce four additional SPY-6(V) radar systems for the US Navy. This latest procurement is part of a series of contracts that together bring the total number of SPY-6 radars under contract to 42, with anticipated deliveries slated by 2028.

Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, highlighted the advanced capabilities of the SPY-6 radar, stating, “SPY-6 enables the US Navy to see further than they’ve ever seen before, providing sailors with more time to respond to detected threats.” She emphasized that this latest contract builds on Raytheon’s decades of experience and expertise in developing modular and maintainable radar systems.

The SPY-6 radar is notable for its versatility, available in four different variants and offering comprehensive 360-degree coverage. It is specifically designed to counter various threats, including cruise missiles, aerial and surface attacks, as well as electronic warfare efforts. Raytheon manufactures the SPY-6 at its advanced Radar Development Facility in Andover, Massachusetts. This 30,000-square-foot site is highly automated, allowing for continuous testing and integration to support multiple radar programs for both US forces and allied nations.

Earlier this month, Raytheon also secured a separate contract worth $536 million from the US Navy for additional SPY-6 units. This contract encompasses training, shipboard installation, engineering support, system integration, and software updates aimed at enhancing the radar’s performance, with deliveries expected by 2026.

These recent contracts are part of a larger hardware, production, and sustainment initiative that was initiated in 2022, with a total value reaching up to $3 billion over a five-year period. This ongoing commitment underlines the critical role that advanced radar technology plays in enhancing the operational capabilities of the US Navy in modern maritime environments.
