Rostec Distributes First Batch of BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicles to Russian Armed Forces in 2023

Rostec has announced the successful distribution of the first batch of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles to the Russian Armed Forces for the year. This development comes after extensive demonstrations and technical evaluations that confirmed the operability of the vehicles for military use. The delivery was made possible through a collaboration with Rostec’s subsidiary, Kurganmashzavod.

The BMP-3, initially introduced into service several years ago, has since evolved through a series of upgrades, especially concerning its primary armament. Over time, more than 20 different variants of this combat vehicle have been developed to meet various operational needs. The first official order from the Russian defense ministry for the BMP-3 was placed in 2015, which specified a requirement for “hundreds” of these vehicles to support military activities while the ministry worked on developing a more advanced infantry fighting system. Deliveries of this platform commenced in 2018 and have continued to the present day.

Currently, the BMP-3s are primarily deployed in what the Russian government refers to as “spetsoperatsiya” (special military operations), a term that officially describes Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

In terms of specifications, the BMP-3 has a weight of 18,700 kilograms (41,226 pounds) and measures 7 meters (23 feet) in length. Its design features aluminum alloy sheet armor on all sides, including the turret. The vehicle is equipped for combat with a 100-millimeter gun launcher, a 30-millimeter autocannon, a grenade launcher, multiple machine guns, and an optional remote weapon station featuring a 57-millimeter autocannon. Powering the BMP-3 is a robust 500-horsepower diesel engine, which allows it to achieve an operational range of 600 kilometers (373 miles) and speeds that can exceed 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour.

The successful distribution of these infantry fighting vehicles marks a significant milestone for the Russian military as it continues to enhance its capabilities amid ongoing conflicts.
