Saab Signs $54 Million Contract with Denmark for Carl-Gustaf M4 Anti-Armor Rifles

Saab has formalized a significant contract with Denmark’s defense procurement agency for the supply of Carl-Gustaf M4 anti-armor rifles, along with the necessary ammunition and training equipment. The deal, valued at 510 million Swedish krona (approximately $54 million), outlines a delivery timeline scheduled for 2026 to 2028.

The Carl-Gustaf system has been a staple in the Danish military since the 1970s. The country introduced the latest M4 variant into its arsenal in 2022, underscoring Denmark’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities. The M4 version, launched in 2014, enhances operational effectiveness due to its lightweight design, weighing under 7 kilograms (15 pounds), and compact length of less than one meter (39 inches), making it particularly suited for urban combat situations.

Saab’s Carl-Gustaf M4 is engineered for superior agility and tactical flexibility. Key advancements in ergonomics include a Picatinny rail-mounted front grip and an adjustable shoulder rest, allowing for a customizable and comfortable fit during use.

The versatility of the M4 is highlighted by its ability to fire various types of ammunition, which encompasses anti-armor, anti-structure, multi-role, anti-personnel, as well as smoke and illumination rounds. Its compatibility with advanced programmable rounds, such as the HE 448 and the Guided Multipurpose Munition, enhances the operational capabilities of dismounted soldiers on the battlefield. The guided munition allows for precise targeting of both stationary and moving objectives at distances exceeding 2,500 meters (8,202 feet).

Görgen Johansson, the head of Saab’s business area Dynamics, expressed confidence in the system’s effectiveness, stating that the Carl-Gustaf M4 provides unmatched precision and a diverse array of ammunition options. He emphasized that this contract will ensure that Danish forces remain well-equipped to meet a wide range of evolving threats. Saab looks forward to further strengthening its long-standing partnership with the Danish Armed Forces through this collaboration.
