Saab UK Opens New Defense Manufacturing Facility in Fareham, Creating 400 Jobs

Saab UK has inaugurated a new defense manufacturing facility in Fareham, Hampshire, focused on advancing radar systems and underwater robotics technologies. This state-of-the-art site, which consists of three buildings, forms part of the company’s commitment to investment in 2023. The facility will primarily serve to manufacture and maintain radar systems that support the British armed forces, including notable products like the Giraffe 1X 3D radar, the Giraffe AMB air defense radar, and the TAIPAN (Arthur) artillery locating radar.

In addition to its radar operations, the facility will enhance the capabilities of Saab’s Seaeye underwater robotics line, which features advanced technologies such as the all-electric subsea remotely operated vehicle, the Seaeye SR20. This dual focus ensures that the site not only meets the needs of the UK military but also caters to the requirements of international clients.

This initiative is expected to create up to 400 jobs, presenting local apprenticeship opportunities that underscore the company’s commitment to workforce development. Jonathan Reynolds, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, highlighted the importance of this investment for the UK’s economy and its forthcoming Industrial Strategy. He emphasized that the new facility is more than just a manufacturing site; it is a cornerstone for future economic growth in the region.

John Healey, Secretary of State for Defence, described the opening as a significant investment that reinforces the defense sector’s role as a driver of economic growth. He noted that the facility would bolster the support provided to the radar systems essential for safeguarding British armed forces, while also fostering highly skilled employment opportunities. “With promising apprenticeship opportunities, this site is helping to drive the jobs of the future,” he remarked, ensuring that the upcoming workforce is equipped with the necessary skills to maintain the UK’s leadership in defense technology.

Earlier this year, Saab announced plans for another manufacturing facility in Finland aimed at expanding the production capabilities of Sirius Compact passive electronic warfare sensors, further underscoring the company’s international growth strategy in defense technologies.
