Saab has announced a significant contract with the Swedish government, valued at 1.6 billion Swedish kronor ($150.4 million), aimed at enhancing the air defense capabilities of Stockholm’s five Visby-class corvettes. This development will see the integration of MBDA’s Sea Ceptor air defense system into these advanced naval vessels, enabling them to engage airborne threats more effectively at extended ranges and offering broader area protection than currently available systems.

The modifications to the Visby-class corvettes, which will include the installation of the Sea Ceptor system, are set to commence in early 2026. Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s business area Kockums, highlighted the importance of this upgrade, stating that it bolsters both Sweden’s and NATO’s air and missile defense capabilities. He emphasized that this improvement enhances the operational readiness of the Swedish Armed Forces, allowing them to effectively operate across the entire conflict spectrum. Wicksell further noted the enduring significance of the Visby-class corvettes, asserting that with the new air defense system, they will remain crucial maritime assets for years to come.

The Sea Ceptor is a sophisticated naval air defense system that utilizes the Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) for intercepting various aerial threats. The missile boasts an active radar seeker capable of performing in all weather conditions, enhancing its reliability and effectiveness. Measuring 3.2 meters (10.5 feet) in length and weighing 99 kilograms (218 pounds), the CAMM has a diameter of 166 millimeters (6.5 inches) and is proficient in engaging targets located up to 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away at supersonic speeds. Its vertical launch capabilities and ability to target multiple simultaneous threats make it a versatile addition to both new and existing naval combat systems.

The Visby-class corvettes, designed by Saab, function as multifaceted surface combat vessels. They are equipped to undertake a variety of missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, and patrolling duties. Constructed with a carbon fiber composite hull, these vessels are lightweight and designed for stealth, allowing for an increased payload capacity. Each corvette measures 72.7 meters (238 feet) in length and accommodates a crew of 43 personnel. Additionally, their propulsion system features a combination of diesel engines and gas turbines, granting them a cruising speed of 5 knots (17 miles/28 kilometers per hour) and a maximum velocity exceeding 35 knots (40 miles/65 kilometers per hour).

This strategic move not only fortifies Sweden’s naval defense capabilities but also aligns with NATO’s broader objectives of enhancing security and operational readiness in an increasingly complex global environment.
