Shri Anugraha Narayana Das, a seasoned officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service from the 1991 batch, has officially taken on the role of Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) as of May 1, 2026. His appointment marks the beginning of a significant new chapter in defence financial management.
With more than 30 years of extensive experience in various capacities, Shri Das has been instrumental in shaping key areas such as defence procurement policy, audit and financial oversight, as well as budgeting and expenditure monitoring. His deep understanding of these critical aspects positions him effectively to steer the financial operations of the Defence Ministry.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has occupied several pivotal roles. Notably, he served as Director in the Ministry of Water Resources, Additional Financial Adviser and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Principal Integrated Financial Adviser at Army Headquarters, and Special CGDA at CGDA Headquarters. Each of these positions has contributed to his robust knowledge and skill set in financial governance and strategic planning.
In addition to his administrative successes, Shri Das possesses strong academic qualifications. He is an alumnus of Utkal University and holds credentials from the International Centre for Promotion of Enterprises (ICPE), University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Moreover, he has furthered his expertise through advanced training programs at prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bengaluru and Duke University in the United States.
His appointment as CGDA is expected to have a lasting impact on defence financial systems. It aims to enhance financial efficiency in defence expenditure, strengthen transparency and accountability, and foster the modernisation and capability development of India’s armed forces.
The responsibilities of the CGDA are critical to the functioning of defence administration. The role involves not only managing defence accounts and payments but also ensuring financial discipline across the Ministry of Defence. Shri Das’s leadership is anticipated to bolster operational readiness by implementing effective financial systems that align with the evolving needs of the Indian armed forces.
