Spanish Navy Welcomes First Unmanned Surface Vessel, the Sead 23

The Spanish Navy has introduced its first unmanned surface vessel (USV), signifying a significant advancement in the integration of unmanned systems within its operations. The Sead 23 has been allocated to the CEVENTA unit, stationed at the naval base in Rota, located in southern Spain. This vessel is designed to undertake a variety of maritime support and surveillance missions, which include patrol, escort, target detection and tracking, coastal reconnaissance, as well as seabed survey operations.

Manufactured by Seadrone, a subsidiary of the Zelenza group, the Sead 23 was commissioned for delivery in November 2024 at a cost of 1.1 million euros (approximately $1.29 million). The platform spans 7 meters (23 feet) in length, with a beam of 2.32 meters (7.61 feet), a draft of 57 centimeters (1.87 feet), and a substantial payload capacity of 600 kilograms (1,323 pounds). This capacity allows for the inclusion of fuel as well as various mission sensors and actuators.

The modular design of the Sead 23 facilitates the integration of advanced technologies including satellite communications and various mission payloads like remote weapon stations and loitering munitions. Constructed from fiberglass, the USV is powered by a robust 320-horsepower diesel engine combined with a waterjet propulsion system, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 36 knots (66.7 kilometers or 41.4 miles per hour). When operating at an economical speed of 4 knots (7.4 kilometers or 4.6 miles per hour), the vessel can sustain its operations for up to a week.

By implementing the Sead 23, the Spanish Navy aims to enhance its operational flexibility, especially in executing high-risk missions while minimizing personnel exposure. The USV is also poised to assist in amphibious operations through efficient landing-zone surveys and bathymetric reconnaissance, as well as contribute to mine countermeasures. It can deploy sonar and underwater vehicles to detect and neutralize threats from a safe distance.

The Sead 23 has already been showcased in several national and international military exercises, including OCEAN 2020, REP(MUS), DÉDALO 23, and BALTOPS 24. Operator training for the vessel is currently in progress, ahead of an extensive testing campaign set for 2026, further solidifying its role and capabilities within the Spanish Navy.
