Sweden Advances Naval Defense with Automated Weapons System on Visby-Class Corvettes

Sweden’s Navy is advancing towards a state-of-the-art automated weapons system with its innovative robotic hatch system on the Visby-class corvettes. Unlike traditional naval designs that feature exposed weaponry, the Visby corvettes maintain a low radar profile through concealed armaments. This new hatch system is pivotal for the forthcoming Robot 15 missile system.

Engineers from the Swedish defense procurement agency (FMV) have successfully completed load tests utilizing a robotic dummy, demonstrating that the hatch can accommodate the stresses associated with operational demands. This collaborative project, spearheaded by Saab Dynamics and Svekon in partnership with the Naval Staff and FMV, is set to unfold in phases until 2030.

Technical System Manager Ida Sjöblom emphasized that this initiative exemplifies effective cooperation between military and civilian sectors, aimed at bolstering Sweden’s defense capabilities.

In addition to the hatch system, Sweden is heavily investing in broader naval modernization efforts. The Gotland-class submarines have undergone significant mid-life enhancements, including the installation of new sensors and combat systems, which also extend their air-independent propulsion capabilities. This modernization effort enables longer underwater patrols while enhancing stealth features. The last submarine of this class, HMS Halland, was relaunched in February 2025 after integrating over 20 critical systems, notably advanced command-and-control technologies.

On the missile front, Stockholm is upgrading its coastal anti-ship systems by incorporating the RBS15 Mk3 missile onto truck-mounted launchers, with the first deliveries projected for 2026. Furthermore, the navy is actively testing advanced networked command-and-control systems across its fleet, enhancing situational awareness and improving data sharing and coordination among vessels during complex operations.

These initiatives reflect Sweden’s strategic commitment to reinforcing its national defense amid evolving maritime challenges.
