Sweden Awards Kongsberg Contract for Advanced Weapon Stations for CV90 Fleet

In a significant move for the Swedish Army, the Defence Materiel Administration has secured a contract with Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace to supply its advanced Protector RS4 remote-controlled weapon stations. Valued at over 400 million krona (approximately $42.7 million), the contract aims to enhance the capabilities of the Swedish Army’s Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) fleet.

This agreement marks a pivotal upgrade as the Army transitions its mechanized units from the existing Protector Nordic (Vapenstation VS01) configuration to the more sophisticated Protector RS4. The deal also includes options for procuring additional units for other army platforms, reflecting a comprehensive approach to modernizing Sweden’s mechanized capabilities.

The RS4 systems will be integrated into three variants of the CV90, now designated as Vapenstation VS02. The updated weapon stations come equipped with integrated sensors and extended engagement ranges, allowing for the operation of multiple weapon types while keeping personnel safe under armor protection.

Alexander Sandercock, project manager at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, commented on the enhancement, stating, “The weapon station VS02 adds a significant capability increase to all platforms on which it is integrated.” This upgrade is particularly crucial as the tracked CV90 remains the backbone of Sweden’s infantry fighting vehicle inventory, available in infantry, reconnaissance, and command configurations.

To further maintain and strengthen its defense posture, Sweden has recently ordered new CV9035 vehicles and has also contributed older CV9040s to support Ukraine amidst its ongoing military challenges. These actions have underscored the urgency for Sweden to replenish and modernize its fleet.

The Protector RS4 itself is a highly versatile system, weighing between 135 and 190 kilograms (298 to 419 pounds), and measuring 505 to 765 millimeters (20 to 30 inches) in height, excluding weaponry and ammunition. Its advanced camera and sensor capabilities allow for tactical flexibility, facilitating both day and night operations.

Offering 360-degree rotation at a swift 90 degrees per second, the RS4 is designed for precise targeting, with an elevation range of negative 20 to 60 degrees and an adjustment speed of 70 degrees per second. It supports various armaments, including the Browning M2 and WKM-B 12.7-millimeter heavy guns, as well as the M249 light machine gun, and multiple 7.62-millimeter machine guns.

Further enhancing its operational versatility, the RS4 can be integrated with grenade launchers such as the MK19, MK47, and H&K GMG 40-millimeter models, complete with airburst functionality, and offers options for numerous non-lethal effectors. Additionally, users can incorporate a coaxial kit for the M240 6.62-millimeter and facilitate the integration of anti-tank guided missiles.

This latest development underscores Sweden’s commitment to advancing its military capabilities in a rapidly changing security environment.
