In a contentious statement made on Tuesday, President Donald Trump floated the idea that Canada could join his newly proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system at no cost—provided it agrees to become the 51st state of the United States. If Canada opts to remain a separate nation, Trump asserted that the cost to participate in the defense initiative would amount to a staggering $61 billion.
The President’s remarks came shortly after he unveiled ambitious plans for the “Golden Dome” system, which he claims would defend against a range of enemy weapons and is projected to have a total cost of approximately $175 billion. Trump stated that the system is expected to be operational by the end of his term in 2029.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump addressed the engagement with Canada, saying, “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion if they remain a separate, but unequal Nation. But (it) will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”
However, Canadian officials have historically expressed resistance to any notion that would compromise national sovereignty. Following Trump’s initial announcement about the missile defense plan, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that Canada had engaged in “high level” discussions regarding the potential for joining the system. Nonetheless, during a visit to the White House earlier in the month, Carney firmly rejected Trump’s overtures regarding statehood, declaring that Canada is “never for sale.”
While both nations are allies in defense through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), Trump’s latest proposal seems poised to heighten existing tensions. Experts have also voiced skepticism over the feasibility of the “Golden Dome” system, highlighting significant technical and political hurdles that could lead to costs surpassing Trump’s estimates.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Canadian government regarding Trump’s latest claims. The unfolding situation underscores ongoing complexities in US-Canada relations, particularly in light of Trump’s administration’s tough stance on tariffs and other trade issues affecting the neighboring country.
