UAE Defense Sector Pursues Advanced Naval Drones Amid Manpower Shortages

Several defense companies are increasingly targeting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as they aim to secure contracts for advanced naval drones, a market that is witnessing significant demand. The nation’s naval force, comprising around 3,000 personnel, is actively seeking sophisticated military technologies to address the shortfalls in manpower exacerbated by contemporary geopolitical challenges.

At the recent International Defense Exhibition (IDEX) and Naval Defense Exhibition (NAVDEX) held in Abu Dhabi, multiple unmanned surface vessels (USVs) were showcased for the first time to the attention of Emirati defense officials. Among the standout innovations was the WAM-V, a versatile platform produced by the US-based firm Ocean Power Technologies (OPT). Often referred to as the “pickup truck” of the USV sector, the WAM-V is recognized for its adaptability across a range of military operations, including underwater sonar capabilities for anti-submarine warfare, sea mine detection, and serving as a communication node for underwater drones. While the WAM-V has been in service with the US Navy, this marks the first public display of its 22-foot (6.7-meter) variant.

Additionally, the UAE Navy encountered domestic innovations, notably the DV10—a locally manufactured optionally-manned interceptor. The DV10 is a collaboration among Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), Steer AI, the Technology Innovation Institute, and the EDGE Group. This 10.2-meter (33-foot) vessel is engineered for operational versatility and can be equipped with a remote weapon station, enhancing its capabilities for swarming operations. Impressively, it can reach speeds of up to 90 knots (approx. 166 kilometers or 103 miles per hour), and can be operated either remotely or from larger naval vessels. ADSB has emphasized that the DV10 is adept at navigating complex maritime environments with notable speed and precision.

These developments reflect the UAE’s strategic prioritization of enhancing its naval capabilities, addressing both technological advancements and operational efficiency in a rapidly evolving defense landscape.
