UK Opens Upgraded Training Facility for Lebanese Armed Forces in Zahrani

The UK has officially inaugurated an upgraded training facility for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in Zahrani, reinforcing efforts to enhance troop readiness for regional deployments. This initiative is supported by the UK’s Integrated Security Fund (ISF), which will provide 1,000 pieces of personal protective equipment, ensuring that LAF personnel are well-equipped and protected during key operations.

Since 2013, the British government has partnered with the LAF’s Land Border Regiments to bolster state authority along the Syrian border, combat smuggling activities, and safeguard local communities. This initiative reflects a continuation of over a decade of defense cooperation between the UK and Lebanon, aimed at fostering stability and security in the region.

In a significant financial commitment for 2024, the UK pledged more than £17 million (approximately $22.8 million) to facilitate LAF deployments, particularly focusing on southern Lebanon. This funding is expected to strengthen the military’s legitimacy as Lebanon’s only recognized military force while enhancing its resilience across the nation.

Following the inauguration of the training center, Bahaa Rafik Hariri expressed gratitude for the UK’s ongoing support, highlighting the significance of the upgraded facility and the advanced protective equipment provided as a strong message of confidence in Lebanon’s national capabilities.

The ceremony was led by British Ambassador Hamish Cowell, who was joined by key figures including British Defence Attaché Lt. Col. Charles Smith, Deputy Head of the UK ISF James Barber, and Head of Programme Sarah Kronfol. In his address, Cowell emphasized the importance of the LAF in safeguarding Lebanon and noted that the British support is aimed at strengthening LAF resilience, addressing critical infrastructure needs, and enabling a sustained military presence in southern Lebanon.

The upgraded training facility and the accompanying resources are seen as crucial steps in enhancing the operational capabilities of the LAF, underscoring the UK’s commitment to promoting security and stability within Lebanon and the broader region.
