UK Sells Refurbished Hovercraft to Pakistan Navy to Enhance Coastal Operations

The UK’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) agency has completed the sale of three refurbished Landing Craft Air Cushion (Light) hovercraft to the Pakistan Navy, marking a significant step in strengthening defense ties between the two nations. The hovercraft, which were previously operated by the Royal Marines, had been decommissioned in 2021, and subsequently underwent refurbishment in 2022 by Griffon Marine Support, a UK-based contractor under the oversight of DE&S Boats.

The sale not only includes the hovercraft but also a package of associated spare parts, showcasing DE&S’s commitment to maximizing the utility of surplus defense equipment. The transaction was finalized by the DE&S Exports and Sales Team, dedicated to generating revenue and promoting partnerships through the sale of surplus military assets.

Commodore Richard Whalley, head of Exports and Sales at DE&S, emphasized the historical context of this sale, noting its contribution to ongoing positive defense relations with Pakistan. He stated, “This sale continues a long history of excellent defense equipment sales with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and reaffirms our positive defense relations. By transferring these proven assets, we are supporting the Pakistan Navy’s ability to enhance its coastal and amphibious operations, supporting our shared goal of maintaining global security, as well as providing a return for the UK’s defense budget.”

A formal handover event took place in London, attended by DE&S officials and representatives from the Pakistan High Commission, signifying the importance of this transaction.

The Landing Craft Air Cushion (Light) hovercraft are engineered to operate effectively on both land and water, enhancing the Pakistan Navy’s capabilities in shallow-water and littoral mission areas. Specifically designed to transport troops, vehicles, and equipment from ship to shore, these hovercraft boast high speed and adaptability across a range of terrains. Their versatility makes them well-suited for various missions, including coastal patrol, humanitarian assistance, and rapid deployment operations.

Given Pakistan’s extensive 1,046-kilometer (650-mile) coastline, the acquisition of these hovercraft is expected to significantly aid the Pakistan Navy in executing swift military responses, conducting maritime patrols, and delivering emergency aid when necessary.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Navy remarked on the importance of defense cooperation with the UK, highlighting ongoing collaboration through joint exercises, training exchanges, and defense acquisitions. They noted that the recent procurement of hovercraft from the UK would bolster Pakistan’s defense capabilities, particularly in the realms of maritime security and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
