Ukraine has announced a significant partnership with Germany to manufacture Bohdana self-propelled artillery systems, utilizing the robust Mercedes-Benz Zetros tactical transport trucks as their base. This ambitious initiative is projected to require an investment of 750 million euros (approximately $879.9 million), with plans to produce up to 200 units.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal revealed that the assembly process for the Bohdana artillery systems, along with necessary integrations, will take place in Ukraine. The Zetros vehicles, integral to this project, will be supplied through German military aid aimed at supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
This collaboration forms part of a broader agreement with Berlin over an enhanced military cooperation, which includes initiatives totaling more than 1.2 billion euros (around $1.4 billion). Among these arrangements, Shmyhal highlighted the long-term provision of spare parts for Ukraine’s existing Patriot mobile interceptor systems, showcasing a sustained commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
In addition to the Bohdana artillery, Ukraine will also engage in the joint production of Linza electronic warfare-resistant drones in partnership with London-based Frontline Robotics and German firm Quantum Systems. Furthermore, Ukraine is set to procure reconnaissance drones for its Armed Forces, worth an estimated 200 million euros ($234.8 million). These efforts are seen as critical to enhancing Ukraine’s surveillance and targeting capabilities.
Another key aspect of the recent agreements is the establishment of a reciprocal exchange of electronic warfare solutions between the military forces of Ukraine and Germany, aimed at improving tactical operations.
The Bohdana system itself features a 155-millimeter NATO-standard cannon designed for mounting on wheeled vehicles. Previously utilized by Ukrainian forces and typically integrated with KrAZ-6322 six-wheeled military trucks, the Bohdana is manned by a crew of five, weighs 28 metric tons (61,729 kilograms), can fire up to five rounds per minute, and boasts a remarkable range of up to 60 kilometers (approximately 37 miles).
On the other hand, the Zetros truck, known for its exceptional off-road capabilities, is designed for versatile transport, including airlifting by the C-130 Hercules aircraft. It comes in various configurations—4×4, 6×6, and 8×8—and can be equipped as standard, semi-trailer, or dump truck. The Zetros features a Euro V engine that delivers 510 horsepower, supports a payload capacity of up to 25 tons (55,116 pounds), and can reach a top speed of 55 miles (89 kilometers) per hour.
This strategic alliance signifies a deepening military collaboration between Ukraine and Germany, reflecting both nations’ commitment to addressing current security challenges and enhancing Ukraine’s defense infrastructure.
