US Approves $235.9 Million Military Support Package for Kuwait's KC-130J Fleet

The US State Department has given the green light for a significant foreign military sale to Kuwait, valued at approximately $235.9 million. This deal focuses on follow-on sustainment support for Kuwait’s fleet of KC-130J transport aircraft.

The comprehensive package includes a variety of essential services and components such as aircraft maintenance services, spare and repair parts, technical publications, and software support. In addition, it emphasizes logistics assistance, training, engineering services, and various measures aimed at sustaining the fleet over the next five years.

US officials highlighted that the proposed sale is crucial for supporting Kuwait’s ongoing maintenance efforts and adding flexibility for future support requirements, ensuring the operational readiness of the Kuwaiti Air Force’s KC-130J aircraft. These transport planes play a vital role in a range of missions, including the transport of personnel and equipment, as well as the protection of national assets.

Prominent contractors involved in the program include V2X, Aviation Training Consulting, CAE USA, Dowty, and Rolls-Royce. Notably, the agreement does not entail the deployment of additional US government personnel to Kuwait.

The backdrop to this military aid comes amid rising regional tensions, particularly due to recent confrontations involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Earlier this month, Iranian military actions that targeted Kuwaiti territory resulted in damage to an airport radar and injuries to several individuals, which led to a temporary closure of Kuwait’s airspace.

In response to these escalating threats, Kuwait has been actively pursuing a series of defense modernization initiatives aimed at bolstering its air, maritime, and counter-drone capabilities. Washington has also approved a substantial potential $1.9 billion counter-drone sale to Kuwait, and recently awarded Raytheon a $1 billion contract for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System fire units.

Furthermore, in May, Leonardo secured a contract worth 320 million euros (approximately $370 million) to supply combat systems for Kuwait’s Al Dorra missile boat program, further illustrating Kuwait’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities amidst ongoing regional instability.
