The US State Department has given the green light for a significant military deal worth $3.42 billion with Peru, involving the sale of F-16 Fighting Falcon jets alongside a comprehensive support package. This transaction, which reflects the escalating military cooperation between the US and Latin America, includes the procurement of 10 F-16C Block 70 and two F-16D Block 70 aircraft. The primary objective behind this acquisition is to bolster the capabilities of the Peruvian Air Force in monitoring its airspace, securing its borders, and conducting precise air-to-ground operations. These capabilities are particularly aimed at supporting ground forces engaged in counter-narcotics and counterterrorism missions.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, this deal is expected to deepen the military partnership between the United States and Peru, further integrating the two nations’ defense efforts. The military package is extensive and features several advanced weapon systems, including 12 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and 48 LAU-129 guided missile launchers, along with four spare units. Notably, it also incorporates 12 M61A1 anti-aircraft guns, which significantly enhance the air combat capabilities of the F-16 jets.

In addition to the armament, Peru has requested AIM-9X Sidewinders, specifically 12 missiles in the Block II configuration, alongside other crucial components such as tactical guidance units and Captive Air Training Missiles (CATMs). The deal further encompasses a range of essential systems, including 14 F110-GE-129 engines, programmed display generators, and advanced navigation systems, with most items to be installed on the aircraft with a few held as spare parts.

Furthermore, the procurement package includes cutting-edge technology such as 14 AN/APG-83 active electronically scanned array radars and various next-generation multifunctional systems. Enhanced capabilities in missile warning, electronic warfare, and targeting are also part of the offer, which ensures that Peruvian forces will have access to advanced infrared search and track sensors, Litening targeting pods, and a variety of communication and logistics support equipment.

Key contractors involved in this significant deal include Lockheed Martin, General Electric Aerospace, and RTX. Overall, this military agreement marks a strategic investment in Peru’s national defense and showcases the strengthening of collaborative defense efforts in the region.
