US Marine Corps Unveils First Full-Rate Production Model of Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS)

The US Marine Corps has made significant strides in enhancing its defensive capabilities with the introduction of the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) in its first full-rate production version. This advanced system represents a major leap forward in the Marine Corps’ short-range air defense strategy, specifically targeting threats posed by drones and low-altitude aircraft.

MADIS integrates a combination of upgraded sensors, advanced targeting algorithms, and enhanced mobility, all housed within two units strategically mounted on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles. This design equips the Marines with a maneuverable Ground-Based Air Defense system, enabling real-time responses to air threats in various operational settings.

The system is engineered to effectively counter unmanned aerial systems (UAS) as well as manned aircraft, whether they are in motion or stationary. Its modular architecture allows for rapid deployment alongside maneuver units, ensuring that the technology can adapt to evolving threats and advancements in enemy capabilities.

The unveiling of MADIS follows extensive new equipment training and live-fire exercises conducted at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. In these exercises, Marines successfully engaged simulated aerial targets, which validated the system’s performance and showcased its tactical effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

MADIS has evolved through years of rigorous development and testing. Initial live-fire exercises commenced in December 2023, during which Marines utilized Stinger missiles and 30mm cannon rounds to engage unmanned aerial targets at the Yuma Proving Ground as part of early production testing.

In January 2025, the focus turned to further refining the system’s crew proficiency and performance during counter-UAS live-fire training at the Pohakuloa Training Area in Hawaii. This phase followed several months of operational testing and evaluation, ensuring that personnel were adequately prepared to utilize MADIS in diverse conditions.

Later that same year, MADIS marked a significant milestone by being deployed outside the continental United States during military exercises in the Philippines. This deployment not only allowed for its first overseas live-fire operation but also involved collaboration with allied forces to explore integrated air and missile defense tactics.

Overall, the introduction of MADIS represents a transformative step in the Marine Corps’ ability to neutralize aerial threats swiftly and effectively, ensuring enhanced protection for ground forces in increasingly complex operational landscapes.
